Adam Kubert is an Eisner Award winning artist who has worked on Marvel, Dark Horse and DC comics. His father, Joe Kubert, worked for DC Comics starting in 1943 and also founded The Kubert School which Adam now runs with his brother Andy. He also works on the monthly comic All New All Different Avengers. Check out our conversation about how he got his start.

Carl: I’m here at Garden State Comic Fest with Adam Kubert. I’d like to ask you a few questions for my readers. Did you want to become a comic book creator when you were a kid?

Adam Kubert: No, I didn’t. Should I talk a little bit more about that?

Carl: Alright.

Adam Kubert: The reason is, when I was a kid I loved to read comics, but I didn’t realize that’s what I wanted to do until I started drawing more and more. And then I found that I really like to tell a story with pictures! When I read comics, I liked the characters more than the creators. I didn’t really follow the creators, I was just into the characters. So, no, when I was a kid I didn’t really want to become a comic creator, I was more or less a comic fan. I didn’t want to become it until later on.

Carl: What comic books did you read when you were a kid?

Adam Kubert: I read a book called Sugar and Spike I read a lot of Superman, which I enjoyed a lot. Mostly, so my dad used to work for DC comics, and he brought home free comics all the time. So I didn’t even know Marvel existed! Otherwise I would have been reading Spider-Man and X-Men and all that. So I read most of the DC books. I loved Batman growing up.

Carl: What comics do you read now?

Adam Kubert: What comics do I read now… Regularly I don’t read many because I run The Kubert School with my brother Andy and I draw a monthly book, so that keeps me pretty busy! I just read… what did I just read? The first few Star Wars by Jason Aaron. I finally had a chance to read that. I read some Uncanny Avengers. I’m drawing Avengers, so I gotta know what’s going on! That’s part of my job, to – believe it or not, I’ve got to read comics! So I think it was Uncanny Avengers I just read.

Carl: Thank you for answering my questions. It was nice to meet you.

Adam Kubert: You’re very welcome!
